verbs have different forms for each
person (or subject).
The Verb Ser (to be)

Here are the singular forms of the verb Ser:


yo soy (I am)
tú eres (you are-informal)
ud. es (you are-formal)
él es (he is)
ella es (she is)

¿Cómo es ud.? What are you like?
Luis es alto Luis is tall.
• Tell where someone/thing is from
¿De dónde eres? Where are you from?
Yo soy de Miami. I am from Miami.
• Identify someone/thing
¿Quién es ella? Who is she?
Ella es mi amiga Rosa. She is my friend

To make a sentence
negative in Spansh, place
“no” before the verb.
• Luis no es alto. Luis is not tall.
• Yo no soy de Hackensack, NJ.
I am not from Hackensack, NJ.
• Rosa no es mi amiga. Es una !
