Third Grades Newsletter

Language Arts
Our reading theme this month was What a Team. All the stories have to do with cooperation, teamwork, perseverance, and responsibility. We are working hard on identifying word relationships such as synonyms, antonyms, homophones, and analogies. Third grade continuing to work on main ideas, details, and summarizing. Students are working on their personal narratives about Hurricane Sandy. When we return from break we will begin our handwriting program, Zaner-Bloser.

Math
Now that we have finished our addition unit we are moving on to subtraction. It is important that students have mastered their addition and subtraction before we begin multiplication in January.

Social Studies
We have begun our new unit on Civics and Government. The focus will be on citizenship and local government. Students will be held accountable to know the responsibilities of our local and state government.

Other News
We have noticed that many of the third grade students do not know their addresses and phone numbers by heart. Please work with your child and make sure they know how to write and recite this important information. A grand time was had by all at the RVCC Planetarium. Students were treated to a new show, Magic Tree House Space Mission. The students did a fabulous job representing our school. Operation Quiet Comfort was a HUGE success! Students completed a quilt square to send a HUG from HOME to a wounded soldier. Thank you for your jean donations. We will let you know when the pictures are posted on the webpage. We are considering involving the students in Operation Shoe Box for the upcoming holiday, where families will be asked to donate items for care packages to be sent out to soldiers.
