We will develop life-long learners with an appreciation and respect for a culturally diverse world. Teachers, parents and the community will work collaboratively to provide authentic, real world, and advanced learning opportunities for all students to use creative and divergent thinking that integrates problem solving and utilizes technology. Central Elementary School is located in suburban Edgewater, MD (approximately 5 miles south of Annapolis) in the Anne Arundel County School District. The school has a population of 683 students in kindergarten through 5th grade (see graph below for demographics). In addition, they also house two special education regional centers: a MINC site (Multiple Intensive Needs Class) and an Autism site, as well as being a full ALPs school (Advanced Learner Program). The school has met AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) for the past 5 years (see graph below for this years MSA data). The school earned the status of becoming a Maryland Green School in 2010. The media specialist, Denise Augustine, and a half-time media specialist, Tammy Coe, see all 29 classes within the 5-day school week. The media center is on a fixed schedule with each class being seen once a week for 45 minutes, except kindergarten which is 30 minutes. The media centers budget is currently $11,152, which is allocated by the county based on $16 per pupil, is used for books and magazines. The countys main media budget provides for databases and other technology. The collection consists of 12,711 books, 31 databases, a SMARTBoard, Senteos, Airliner, projector and document camera.
