Women before WWI


Women formed half of the population in the USA. Middle class were to be expected to lead restricted lives. They had to wear clothing that didnt reveal to much of their skin; behave in a mannerly way. Couldnt wear any make-up.

Their relationship with men were controlled in a strict way. They were expected to not play sports, smoke or drink in public. Women couldnt vote. Very few jobs were open to women. In the 1920s, the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote in all states.

They smoked in public and drank with men without having chaperones. They even kissed in public.

Younger women wore more daring clothes.

Women are more likely to leave if they are in a unhappy relationship. There were twice as many divorces.

Media saw women in a different way and thought sex sells better than anything else.

Women took more jobs, by 1929 there were 24% more women working.
