Who We Are

Global Brigades (GB) is a secular,


501c3 nonprofit organization that
empowers university students and
young professionals nation-wide to
provide communities in developing
countries with sustainable solutions
that improve quality of life while
respecting local culture.

Currently more than 1,500 volunteers


from 50 of our university clubs travel
annually to provide health care,
microenterprise development, and
clean water systems to more than
50,000 beneficiaries in Central
America, Ghana, India and Vietnam. We
are the world’s largest student-led
international development
organization.

Organizational Overview

Global Brigades (GB) facilitates a multi-disciplinary approach through


health, development and education programs that relieve poverty
while also improving the environment.

GLOBAL WATER BRIGADES-2008

Global Water Brigades (GWB) is a secular network of students and


professionals working with developing nations to create sustainable
solutions to water problems.

To achieve this end, GWB provides student clubs with the necessary
materials, support and infrastructure to collaborate with rural
communities to create studies, design projects and implement unique
clean water solutions.

THE COMMUNITIES

• Buena Vista
Currently suffers from two failed
projects, one over 20 years old.
No one has direct water access,
and the central storage tank
remains empty most of the year.
There is no purification and the
community suffers from
parasites and other waterborne
sicknesses.
• Joyas del Carballo
The water system, built originally
for 50 homes, now attempts to
serve 280. Most homes have no
access to the water. The water
source, a small stream, is drying
up quickly, and the community 7

The Brigade

A 7/8 day trip to Honduras with a


group from your university to work
on water solutions includes:

• Introduction to water projects and


Honduras
• Community assessment and door-
to-door surveys
• Discussion with community leaders
and meetings with the entire
community
• Cooperation with Honduran water
expert and other local
organizations
• Project implementation: designing,
construction, community
organizing 10
TRIP COSTS

GWB asks all students to cover their own


costs. This includes airfare and in-country
expenses.

Price per student for Water Brigade trip:


– $650 plus airfare (between $500 and
$1000)
– $100 of in-country cost goes towards a
Community Investment Fund (CIF) to
be put towards the water project

This enables us to bring students to


Honduras and still put all of our resources
toward helping the Honduran people. It
also allows us to remain independent
from outside influence and give all of our
students complete control over their
projects.

The cost is an investment into the 11


IN-COUNTRY COST INCLUDES…

• Picked up from the airport by your in-country brigade coordinator


• All transportation provided, with professional drivers
• Housing in our secure, comfortable accommodations
• Electricity, showers (with hot water), and linens
• Laundry and room cleaning
• Three meals a day cooked
with clean water by our
Honduran staff (vegetarian
options available)
• Hiring a Honduran water
expert
• Translators and guides,
when necessary
• Day trip to Valle of
Angeles, a beautiful colonial-
style city in the mountains of 12
