Complex Numbers Eulers Formula

Aim To explain what Eulers Formula is and to demonstrate its usage. Learning Outcomes At the end of this section you will be able to: Write a complex number in exponential polar form, Simplify complex numbers written using Eulers formula. Eulers Formula which is presented on page 9 of the log tables states that ei = (cos + i sin ). From this it is easy to see that a complex number, when written in polar form, i.e z = r(cos + i sin ) can easily be converted in exponential polar form using Eulers formula to give z = rei . Example Simplify the following complex number z = e(2+i 2 ) . We know that an+m = an am , therefore e(2+i 2 ) = e2 .ei 2 , = e2 cos + i sin , 2 2 = e2 (0 + i) = ie2 . using Euler s Formula,
