of the three categories of listening. 1. Listening with a purpose: Listening with a purpose would be listening to understand or find something out. So youre really paying attention.

2. Listening objectively: Listening with an open mind about the things you are hearing.

3. Listening constructively: Listening with an attitude and evaluating what you are hearing.

Activity #2 Which of the four listening styles (Action-Oriented, People-Oriented, Time-Oriented, and Content-Oriented) best describes your own approach to listening? Once you have considered Figure 9.2 on page 217 to determine your style, list three pros and three cons that come with being this kind of listener. Pros: 1.Getting the message across quickly 2. Interesting stories 3.Not faltering when I speak Cons: 1.Becoming frustrated when the information is all over the place. 2.Not paying attention to people who just carry on with their stories. 3.Imaptient

Activity #3 Define the textbook term prejudging and give three reasons how it can occur in a classroom listening situation. To accompany each situation, provide a brief strategy to overcome this obstacle to effective listening 1. Prejudging: automatically shutting out what is being said. When other people are talking about things that dont interest you, to overcome this you could try to give them a chance and listen.

2. A classroom debate: Listening to everyones opinion and side and then telling them yours instead of becoming too emotional

3. Someone over talking you: Talk things out and explain yourself
