Holiday Season...

These ornaments are fun and easy to make. Theyre affordable, too, since they call for ordinary household items. Its fun for children of all ages. Let the creative juices flow!

KIDS in the Kitchen . . .

1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup salt 1/2 cup of warm water (you may need more)

Salt Dough Ornaments

1. Combine the flour and the salt, then slowly add enough water to form a workable dough. If you plan to make hand prints, the dough will need to be nice and soft, so you will need to add just a bit more water. You want to be able to easily press your hand into the dough. For other shapes, a stiffer dough is preferred. 2. Knead the dough for about 10 minutes and then let it (and you) rest for 40 minutes. 3. Roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thickness. If making ornaments, cut out shapes using cookie cutters. For hand prints, have the child place his/her hand firmly into the dough and then trace around it with a table knife or a plastic knife. Poke a hole in the cutout for hanging. 4. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. Carefully transfer the cutouts to a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake for 4-6 hours (or until hard). 5. Once the ornaments are hard and dry, its time to decorate! Let the kids express their creativity with paints, glitter, buttons, ribbon - you name it! Using a felt-tip pen, add the childs name and the year. Give the ornaments a spray of polyurethane to seal the ornaments so they will keep beautifully. 6. Hang your pretty creations with a festive ribbon or tie them onto a wreath or a Christmas tree -- or use an ornament instead of a bow to adorn a gift package for someone special. 7. To store the ornaments, wrap them individually in tissue paper and place them in a sealable container. Store in a cool, dry place. With proper care, they should last for years to come.

Dear Classified Guys, My wife and I recently found out we're going to be first-time grandparents. That was enough to make us finally clean out the spare room so our new arrival could come visit. In the process of cleaning, I came across an old desk that I inherited from my grandfather many years ago. Now I've watched enough episodes of Antique Road Show to know that it is either destined to be a great antique or just a pile of old firewood. That is the current record for the most expensive non-pictorial work of art ever sold at auction. With the tap of a gavel at a London Christie's auction in 2004, a badminton cabinet, built around 1720, broke it's previous sales record of 15 million dollars. Made by the Henry Somerset, third Duke of Beaufort, the cabinet is considered more a work of art than a piece of furniture. Today it is on display at the Liechtenstein Museum in Vienna.

Carry: Machine cut furniture came around 1860, so you can imagine that a handmade desk may be quite old. If you determine the desk is handmade, then consider calling a reputable antique dealer to appraise it further. Cash: Although regardless of its value, maybe it's something you want to incorporate into the playroom since it is a family heirloom. After all, your new grandson will need a place to color with his crayons.

Sitting in Style
When it comes to furniture, many of us have our favorite chair in the house and most of us recognize the brand name La-Z-Boy. Designers of the first reclining chair, Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker created their invention in the late 1920's. Originally designed as a wooden slatted chair, they began covering it with upholstery at the request of their customers. However, the final name for their invention was the result of a contest. Although entries like "The Sit and Snooze" and "The Slack Back" made the list, "La-Z-Boy" ultimately won out.
