Baltimore Police Announce Arrest for November 2012 Vehicular Homicide
BALTIMORE, MD / December 13, 2012 - The Baltimore Police Departments Homicide Section announces the arrest of 19 year old Jewel Lucas in connection to the murder of 35 year old Delma Leroy Barnes. On November 17, 2012, officers responded to a gas station located in the 5300 block of Frankford Avenue for a report of a pedestrian struck. The victim was identified as Delma Barnes and was found suffering from severe trauma due to being struck, then ran over by an automobile. Barnes was transported to an area hospital where he died a short time later. The manner and cause of Barnes death was determined to be homicide by multiple injuries sustained as a result of being struck by the automobile. Due to the aid of witness statements and closed circuit television, detectives determined the suspect vehicle was possibly a 2000-2001 black Mazda. A still image of the suspects vehicle as well as a photo of a possible suspect was released to the local media to elicit the publics help in identifying the suspect. Jewel Lucas was identified as the suspect in the death of Barnes and has been formally charged with 1st and 2nd degree murder as well as 1st and 2nd degree assault. Detectives credit community intelligence and media involvement as vital in identifying the suspect and making an arrest in this case.
