    Rajesh Punjabi 03812304 GR616 - Influences Erik Spiekermann In the town of Stadthagen in Germany, Erik Spiekermann was born

    on May 30th, 1947. When Erik was 12 years old, his neighbor gave him a little printing press and some type. Fascinated by type at a young age, Spiekermann ran a printing press in the basement of his house while studying art history at Berlins Free University. In 1972 Erik began working as a freelance graphic designer in London until 1979, when he would return to Berlin. Spiekermann founded MetaDesign, a global design consulting firm, along with Uli Mayer-Johanssen and Hans Ch. Krger. The firm focused on corporate design systems for companies such as BVG (Berlin Transport), Dsseldorf Airport, Audi, and Volkswagen. FontShop, founded in 1989 by Erik and his wife, was the first mail-order distributor for digital typefaces. FontShop International soon follows and publishes the FontFont range of typefaces. ITC Officina Sans and ITC Officina Serif were designed in 1990. However in 1991, Spiekermann began designing FF Meta for the Deutsche Bundespost (West German Post Office). As his answer to Helvetica, which Erik found to be boring, was embraced by the design community and was quickly being adopted by other designers. Spiekermann left Meta Design in 2001 due to policy disagreements. Erik then started UDN | United Designers Networks, known today as Edenspiekermann. In April of 2006, the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena awarded Erik with an Honorary Doctorship. Shortly after, his family of typefaces for Deutsche Bahn (German Railways), designed with Christian Schwartz, received a Gold Medal at the German Federal Design Prize. Currently Spiekermann is a professor at the University of the Arts Bremen.
