Gravity Racing Challenge Broadens Students Education at Ohio School

In 2011, Tallmadge City Schools Superintendent Jeff Ferguson issued a challenge to middle school Technology and Engineering Education teacher Justin Christopher to engage his students by applying what they have learned to real-world experiences. Christopher saw the Gravity Racing Challenge (GRC) - the International Soap Box Derbys educational outreach program - as a perfect opportunity to meet this businesses. While the Gravity Racing Challenge does culminate in a race, the racing is only one small part of the overall competition. Students compete in seven different categories, including the design and development of a banner, a t-shirt, a Soap Box Derby promotion poster, a car theme, an infomercial, and an essay. Davis noted how the program also requires students to use a variety of skills beyond the obvious technical aspects. One of the skills is being able to work together as a team. Thats whats really cool about this whole program, he said. We always talk about the importance of cooperative learning, and this really gets the kids working together. Christopher said he hopes to expand the program over time at Tallmadge to include teams at the elementary and high schools. It is the goal of the Tallmadge City Schools to have a streamlined K-12 STEM curriculum, and the Gravity Racing Challenge is a perfect platform on which to build part of this curriculum, he said.
