November/December 2012

Classes/Collaboration
The library saw a huge upswing in the number of classes and collaboration with teachers. As of the end of November, class use rose by 48% and collaboration from 48 to 110 (comparing August to November of this year to last year). Because of common core, students will need more exposure to research and informational text in books. Stop by and talk to us about how we can help you implement common core.

Google Earth
Mrs. Myers taught students in some of the Freshman Academy social studies classes how to create a tour. The lesson tied in with Geography Week. Google Earth can also be integrated with other subjects:. English Students create a literature tour <tracing the path of character or storyline> Math Use real-time coordinates to demonstrate distance calculations and verify the results Calculate the volume of the Great Pyramids and estimate the land area lost to Amazon deforestation. Science View Google Earth layers containing images, links, and descriptions, with information about thousands of volcanoes around the globe, thanks to organizations like the Smithsonian Institution's Global Volcanism Program. Identify suitable habitat for an animal using satellite imagery in Google Earth

Nooks!
The library ordered five Simple Nooks and loaded them with titles. Students may check out a Nook and read it IN the library. Also, students who own their own e-reading device (Nook, Kindle, etc) can use it in the media center. To list just a few, titles on the Nooks include The Maze Runner, Fairest, Eli the Good, Alice in Zombieland, The Sky is Everywhere, and some classic titles.

Poetry Outloud
