NUTRITION

Stephanies tip of the month: As we age, our bodies have different nutritional needs. If you are over 50 it is especially important to get enough B12 in your diet from fortified cereals, lean meats, and seafood.

GUIDELINES

Its hard to believe that summer is here! Please take a minute to review a few simple guidelines. These friendly reminders will help ensure that all our guests enjoy a wonderful summer at the Center. LOCKER ROOM ETIQUETTE Help keep locker rooms.... Tidy: Dont leave used towels on the floors or benches; instead, please discard your used towel in the many hampers conveniently located throughout all locker rooms. Hygienic: When going au naturel (naked), please remember to use a towel to sit upon. Discreet: For your personal comfort, as well as those around you, please use discretion when tending to personal hygiene needs.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Jeanne Schaefer

Our member spotlight this month is on Jeanne Schaefer, a source of inspiration to all of us at Page Mill YMCA. A victim of childhood polio, Jeanne has very few working nerves in her right arm and shoulder and her fitness routine was hampered as an adult by breast cancer. But she was determined to shake her sedentary lifestyle, even though she didnt much like working out and was less than thrilled when her personal trainer, Shannon, said that she should set an exercise goal of at least three times a week. Jeanne has been meeting once a week with Shannon and twice each week coming to the gym! Can it be shes actually learning to enjoy those workouts? We think so, and she agrees. See what she says below: OUR Q AND A: What brought you to the Y? I first came to the Y in January 2011 as part of the Live Strong Live Well Program. After breast cancer surgery, my physical therapist told me that recent research suggested that people who exercised were less likely to have recurrence of their cancer. The link between exercise and better cancer outcomes motivated me to join the Live Strong Live Well program. I enjoyed the program and vowed that when it ended I would continue my fitness program at the Y. However, shoulder surgery to repair my rotator cuff and months of physical therapy were good excuses not to go back to the Y. This past March I decided that I needed to get fit. My shoulder had recovered well from the surgery and I no longer had any excuses not work out. How long have you been a member of page mill? Since March 2012 What inspires you to get to the gym? Several things - knowing that exercise is good for me, that I have more energy when I exercise, and that hiking and other activities are more enjoyable when Im in better shape. Its not fun walking in the Arastradero Preserve when I get out of breath trying to climb a hill. What advice would you give to someone whos thinking about starting a workout routine (and is a little intimidated)? Its OK to start very slowly. Small steps lead to progress over time. If you miss a workout, dont beat yourself up about it. Just go back the next time. If youre tired and dont feel like going to the gym, tell yourself that you just have to go and spend 5 minutes and then you can leave. Ive told myself that and I always stay longer than five minutes. Once I get to the Y and Im surrounded by people who are working out, it motivates me and I end up going through my whole exercise routine.

CAMPAIGN CORNER

Did you know that the Page Mill YMCA partners with the Lucille Packard Childrens Hospital to offer a fitness program for families struggling with childhood obesity? Our program, supported by dollars raised during our Annual Giving Campaign, teaches participants the value of exercise and good nutrition. The family attends as a whole so that lessons can be brought back home and practiced. The program hosts lectures, group exercise classes, racquetball and more. Interested in helping out?
