Unlike Elwell Elementary School, whose ultimate fate may be a wrecking ball and destruction, the Van Buren Public Schools Board of Education decided at its regular meeting on Dec. 10 to remake
the dormant Haggerty Elementary School as a site focused on early childhood education and development, and a young adult transition program designed to teach life and job skills, enhancing their employability traits. VBPS Superintendent Mike Van Tassel said that
educational programs that would receive consideration for placement in Haggerty had to satisfy the following criteria: Increase student learning. Enhance revenue at best; be revenue-neutral at worst. Programs must be implemented without additional resources to design or develop. Programs must able to be implemented in a six-
month window, and wont require building renovations. Using these criteria, Haggerty Elementary School on Haggerty Road, on the south side of Van Buren Township, was recommended for three different uses, very possibly all three uses in the building: Move the Early Childhood Development Center from the site of the old Edgemont School to Haggerty School. Larger
classrooms with convenient hallway access would benefit learning, and would provide office space for an occupational therapist, a speech therapist and a social worker. Additional room would enable the district to expand its preschool programs, particularly for those children whose parents cannot afford to pay for a pre-school program,

Last week, Rawsonville held its second Family Math Night. Families had the opportunity to make and take various games from the new math curriculum, Everyday Math. Throughout the evening, families were encouraged to visit numerous gradelevel specific stations to make math activities like Monster Squeeze, Polygon Pair-up and Roll & Record. Teachers explained how to create the games which the families could immediately take home to use that evening. Its nice to see parents, students, and teachers working together to ensure academic success, kindergarten teacher Pauline Howell commented about the event. In this photo, Howell helps Jayden Butler and his family make the game Monster Squeeze.

It was launched less than a decade ago, but the Belleville Community Bands annual Christmas concert has become a much-anticipated part of the areas holiday calendar.
A chance to gather and experience both some traditional and unique musical offerings, this years concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 417 Charles St. Although its occurring a little later this year than normal, the concert still promises an evening of ear-pleasing entertainment. Its a great way to bring in the season, says Tim Miller, the bands conductor. I think it just brings in a nice warm feeling for the holiday. Its fun for people to have a place to
come out and sit down and hear the concert. Fridays show, which Miller expects to clock in at about 90 minutes or so, will include a singalong and traditional holiday fare, but the band will also deliver some more unusual, though appropriate, tunes. I always (plan) kind of an eclectic program, Miller says. Were going to do a tune called Cowboy Christmas. One called a Flemish Christmas, which are four Christmas carols from Denmark and that area. ... Those
