Key Questions: What is resilience to Climate Extremes?

How does local culture play a role in local resilience to Climate Extremes? What connections exist between culture and the built environment? How can design play a role in building local resilience?

2015 - Linking The Community With The Creek:

Zac, 12
The new park space gives my friends and I a great place to meet up. The central location means that it is easy for all my friends to get there quickly. We enjoy going to the park as there is always lots of things happening - whether it be cricket or trying some new tricks at the skate park. I especially like when the water is high in the creek trying to catch some fish. Also twice a week we get to come down to the park with school and we have lunch time here. I think the teachers like it because they can sit on the central mound and watch everything going on in the park from the one picturesque spot.

I have live in Semmens Crt for five years. The aspect which I like most about the new creek is how connected I feel to the whole community. Going to the shops is no longer a chore - instead the journey along the new water feature bridge is highly enjoyable and differs each time I go along it depending on the weather conditions. This space seems to lure people to due to its connection to Albert St and therefore I enjoy sitting along it and talking to the vast array of people who filter along with the flow of the water under their feet. I think it is great how this space allows people to interact with the creek - as I feel the creek was ignored previously and was a real dividing line.

I work for Emmetts and I have exhibited at numerous events such as Field Days. The main product that I am selling is the new Portable Firefighter Unit. This festival has a different vibe - it has the feeling of a real desire for change. Everyone here is looking at ways to innovate and make their lives more resilient. This culture that is evolving in Creswick is amazing and I hope that it grows and spreads. As there is a real need to break down the complacency of people in modern society - we need to be prepared for events such as bushfires which have the potential to quickly and savagely ruin lives.

2030 - The Creek As A Social Hub:

Matt, 42
I moved to Creswick five years ago from Ballarat as I really enjoyed the natural aspects and resilient culture that Creswick has become known for. I especially like jogging on the newly built boardwalk along the creek after a stressful day of work and connecting with the natural aspects of the space - from the sound and shimmer of flowing water to the chirp of birds in the trees along the path. I also enjoy how the creek has become a real focal point of the town and hive of activity. I feel that this area has helped to not only physically but socially build a more linked and community orientated culture in Creswick.

2050 - The Creek As The Centre Of The Town:

Lynne, 52
I have lived in Creswick my whole life and I jumped at the opportunity when it was announced that a new business precinct open overlooking the Creek. My business now runs in shop 12 in the self-sustainable buildings. I run an organic green grocers and the majority of my produce is grown on site on the roof gardens of this building. It has been amazing to watch the culture shift over the years from Albert St as the CBD to nowadays where the creek is the physical and emotional heart of the town. I feel this change has a created a far more positive future for the community as it grows with its natural assets.
