Age and Coin Problem.
Age Problem:
Angela's Brother, Nathaniel, is 1 year older than her. 49 is the sum of their ages in 12 years. What are their present ages?
Representation:
Let X = Angela's Age X + 1 = Nathaniel's Age Sum of Present Age Angela's Age Nathaniel's Age X X+1 X + 1 + X = sum of present age X + 12 + X + 1 + 12 = sum of ages in 12 years Sum of Ages in 12 Years X + 12 X + 1 + 12
Equation:
X + 12 + X + 1 + 12 = 49 Green = Angela age Blue = Nathaniel age
Solution:
X + 12 + X + 1 + 12 = 49 (2x) (12 + 12 +1) = (49) (2x) (25) = (49) 2x = 49 25 2x = 24 2x/2 = 24/2 X = 12
Answer:
(X = 12) Angela's Age (X + 1 = 13) Nathaniel's Age
Checking:
X + 12 + X + 1 + 12 = 49 12 + 12 + 12 + 1 + 12 = 49 X = 12

Coin Problem:
I have 3 pieces of 5 peso coins. The number of 1 peso coins that I have is 1 added to the number of pieces of the 5 peso coins. What is the amount of all the coins that I have?
Representation:
Let X = Amount of 3 P5 coins. X + 3 + 1 = Amount of all the coins. Amount of 3 P5 coins Coins that I have X amount of P1 coins 3+1 Amount of all the coin X+3+1
Equation:
X + 3 + 1 + X = 34 Red = amount of 3 P5 coins Blue = amount of all coins
Solution:
X + 3 + 1 + X = 34 (2x) (3 + 1) = 34 (2x) (4) = 34 2x = 34 4 2x = 30 2x/2 = 30/2 X = 15
Answer:
(X = 15) Amount of 3 P5 coins (X + 3 + 1) Amount of all coins
Solution:
X + 3 + 1 + X = 34 15 + 3 + 1 + 15 = 34 X = 15
