Problem C

Slide 1

Brief
Aim To find a cover design of minimum mass that withstands the defined loading conditions while satisfying deformation and stress considerations. Conditions Max deformation <0.05mm and max equivalent stress <200MPa Design factors are to explore different arrangements to the nominal design shown on the next slide such that there are more factors than D, S, T, W. Files (.stp and .xmt) of the nominal design are available. An external pressure of 1MPa is applied to the cover. Cover material is aluminium: - Youngs modulus = 71GN/m2 - Ultimate Tensile Strength = 310MN/m2 - Compressive Yield Strength = 280MN/m2 - Tensile yield strength = 280MN/m2 - Poissons ratio = 0.33

Problem description
Only three perpendicular ribs shown for nominal design but you are to explore different design having more ribs that may be placed at various angles. Design factors will include depth, D; width, W; and spacing, S of these ribs plus wall thickness, T, of the cover wall.

Boundary Conditions: Normal (frictionless) constraints on both the bottom and side inner surfaces of this lip.

Boundary Conditions: Normal (frictionless) constraints on both the bottom surface of these counter bores.

(Frictionless supports place a normal constraint on a surface. Translational displacement is allowed in all directions except into and out of the supported plane. )
