SHAKEN Baby SYNDROME

The most consequential but hardly known baby killer.

The STATISTICS
One shaken baby out of four will die Studies estimate 15% of children's deaths are due to battering/shaking, and an additional 15% are potential cases of shaking. 37 children died in Florida in 1995-96; 13 of those died from a combination of Shaken Baby Syndrome/ Head Trauma. Sad, isnt it? There are thousands of babies surviving death, but, sadly, serious injury usually occurs; physically and or mentally. SBS victims range in age from a few days to a few months old; the average is six months. SBS babies are usually infants who are very small.

More than 60% of the victims of Shaken Baby Syndrome are male.
Almost 80% of the perpetrators of Shaken Baby Syndrome are male.

50% offenders are natural born parents 17% are not even relatives 17% is moms new boyfriend 10% other 6% are the step parents

The Effects on the SBS victims


Halfway or total blindness Losing your hearing Having seizures Damaged intellect Struggling with speech and learning Problems with memory and attention Severe mental retardation Cerebral palsy

Symptoms
Head turned to the side. Unable to lift/turn head. Pinpointed, dilated, or unequal sized pupils. Blood pooling in the eyes. Pupils unresponsive to light. Bulging/spongy forehead. Weak sucking/swallowing. Semi-consciousness Trouble breathing. Seizures/spasms. Swollen head, which might show up later.
