Introduction: In our previous lessons, we have examined and studied contact forces and the like.

Now, we move on and examine another kind of force in fluid mechanics, namely buoyant force. Buoyant force is mainly responsible for keeping objects afloat in liquid mediums. It is directly related to the density of the liquid, weight and volume of the object submerged. However, the experiment we devised is not just concerned with measuring the buoyant force that acts on an object. The goal of our experiment is to test and evaluate the different factors that affect buoyant force. Moreover, we want to use this concept as a way of measuring the density of a given liquid medium.

Methodology: In our experiment, we used three different kinds of liquid mediums; water, juice and oil, which were place in a glass beaker. As for the objects, we used 5 circular metal disks with different masses and heights. The volume of each disk was calculated through the use of a caliper. The metal disks were tied by a string and hooked up to the force sensor in order to measure each disks weight. Then, we measure its weight again when it is placed in the beaker containing the liquid. This is done for each kind of liquid medium. Using the difference in weights, we compute for the buoyant force and later compute for the density of each liquid medium.
