The park is located along the border of the Boyac and Arauca depa rtments. The two main town to access the park are El Cocuy and Gicn

It is a mountain range streching north to south that contains several snow covered peaks. The western part of the park is low lands tropical forest all the way to the Llanos region and is off limit to tourism because of absence of tracks and guerilla presence.

El Cocuy is characterized by post-glacial geological morphology, including steep slopes, cirques, moraines , and glacier-gouged lakes La Pintada and La Cuadrada. The park's topography covers 4,500 meters (15,000 feet) from its lowest point to its highest point. The park is visited by climbers and rock climbers of all skill levels

The Sierra Nevada del Cocuy is a 306,000 km protected area from which rise 23 snow peaks surrounded by waterfalls, lakes, pramo vegetation

Spectacled Bear, Tapir Pramo, Deer, Tigrillo, Morrocoy, Mico maicero, Guartinajo, Puma and all wild cat species recorded in Colombia In the group of birds are: Condor, Golden Eagle, Gallito de Roca, Paujil,yellow parakeets an Peje duck.

The high diversity of ecosystems of flora diversity is immense, as the following species: Frailejn, Encenillo, covered, dwarf bamboo, epiphytes, Yopo, Valerian, and timber and Senecios Yellow Cedar, Mold Totumo and others. The Sierra is rich in endemism (plants that only grow in certain places), there are several species endemic Frailejones and Senecios.
