Substitution Method for Math

By L.D.

Problem 1

y+x=6 2x + 10y = 44

Problem 1

y+x=6 2x + 10y = 44 y+x=6 -y -y 0+x=6y 6y=x

1. To do substitution we need to have at least one of the problems equal to a variable that has no constant. So we need to reorder one of the problems. I choose the top one because it looks easier. When you get a zero you can get rid of it.

Problem 1

6y=x 2x + 10y = 44

2. Now we know what x is we can insert it into the problem.

2(6 y) + 10y = 44

Problem 1

6y=x 2x + 10y = 44

3. Solve

2(6 y) + 10y = 44 12 2y + 10y = 44 12 + 8y = 44 -12 -12 0 + 8y = 32 8y = 32 8 8 y=4

Problem 1

6y=x 2x + 10y = 44 6 4= x x=2

4. Insert the y into one of the problems. I choose the top.

Problem 1: Answer

(2, 4)

Problem 2

2y + 4x = 22 6y + 2x = 16

Problem 2

2y + 4x = 22 6y + 2x = 16 (2y + 4x = 22) y + 2x = 11

1. To do substitution we need to have at least one of the problems equal to a variable that has no constant. So to get a variable with out a 2 constant we have to take one problem (I choose the top) and divide it by one of the numbers the coefficient has to make it y(1y) or x(1x). But by doing this we effect the whole problem.

Problem 2

y + 2x = 11 3x + 1 = 16y

2. Now we need to reorder my chosen problem so that it can be used.

y + 2x = 11 -2x -2x y = 11 2x

Problem 2

3. Now we insert the y we now have into the other problem.

y = 11 2x 3x + 1 = 16y

3x + 1 = 16(11 2x) 3x + 1 = 176 32x +32x +32x 35x + 1 = 176 -1 -1 35x = 175 35 35 x=5

Problem 2

4. Insert the x into one of the problems now, I choose the top.

y = 11 2x 3x + 1 = 16y

y = 11 2(5) y = 11 - 10 y=1

Problem 2: Answer

(5, 1)
