Simple Past Tense

1. Use the simple past tense to talk actions, states, and situations in the past that are now finished.

2. You can use the simple past tense with time expressions that refer to the past. Some examples of past time expresions are: last week, in 1886, 100 years ago, in the nineteenth century.
Emily Dickinson lived in the nineteenth century. She died more than 100 years ago. It was in 1886.

3. Remember: The past tense of regular verbs is formed by adding d or ed to the base form of the verb. live lived

Spelling Rules for the Simple Past Tense of Regular Verbs


1. If the verb ends in a consonant, add ed. return returned

2. If the verb ends in e, add d. live lived

3. In one syllable words, if the verb ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant combination (CVC), double the final consonant and add ed.

4. However, do not double one-syllable words ending in w, -x, or y.

5. If the verb ends in a consonant + y, change the y to i and add ed.

6. If the verb ends in a vowel + y, add ed. (Do not change the y to i.) annoyed
