Guided Reading Lesson Plan Michelle Terry 12/04/11 Grade Level: 1st I. Objectives: a.

The students will know what a summary is. b. The students will understand that when summarizing a story you should not include every detail, just main points. c. The students will be able to summarize the story using a graphic organizer. II. AR Frameworks: a. AR.1.R.9.13 (R.9.1.13) Summarizing and synthesizing for meaning: Retell a story by including story elements Common Core Curriculum Standards: b. CC.1.R.L.3 Key Ideas and Details: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details. III. Materials: a. A copy of The Surprise Snow by: Julianna Olmos for each student b. Graphic organizer for each students IV. Procedure: a. *Schema Activation: Lets take a look at the cover. What do you think this story will be about? Snow. Thats right. Who has ever played in the snow? What did you do? Did you make snow angels? Did you build a snowman? Have a snowball fight? Well today we are going to read through this story and see what happens. After we are done reading we are going to summarize what happened. Which means we are going to take the main ideas from the story to explain what happened in the story without retelling the entire story. To help us do this we are going to use a graphic organizer. So while you are reading the story be sure to think about the setting, the main characters, and the big things that happen in the story. b. *Rest of Procedure: i. Picture walk through the book ii. Have students quietly read aloud through the story. iii. Listen to students as they read and help as needed. iv. After they have read through the story pull out the graphic organizers.

1. Before handing them the graphic organizers, walk through the parts of the organizer. 2. Have children tell you the setting, main characters, and beginning, middle, and end. 3. If they cant remember something encourage them to go back to the story to find the answer. v. Then hand out the organizers and help them fill it is as needed. Telling them that using these specific parts is a way to summarize the story for those who havent read it. vi. After the group has filled out the graphic organizer have them draw a picture of their favorite part on the back of the paper. c. *Closure: Talk about the story. Where the student predictions right at the beginning? What was their favorite part? How does this connect with them? Have we had a recent surprise snowstorm? Does this connect to any other books that they have read? V. Evaluation of Student Learning: a. The students will understand that a summary is shorter and does not need to have ever detail in it. b. I know the students will have met the objectives when they are able to accurately fill out the graphic organizer using details from their reading. c. I know the students will have met the objectives when they are able to recall main characters and ideas from the story without stating every little detail.
