This is a new school for the BSF One School Pathfinder programme. As an upper school the ambition has been to provide faculty buildings that are a step towards University, helped by adopting a Campus approach, evident in the existing buildings on site. The faculties have their own individual identities, each incorporating separate buildings arranged around the Quad at the heart of the scheme. The DCSF have selected the scheme as one of only three School Pathfinder Projects to receive additional funding to become Sustainability Demonstration Projects, permitting the inclusion of a ground coupled undercroft ventilation system, biomass boilers, active solar equipment and a sustainability centre. The faculties are interlinked by first floor covered bridges and this continues our thinking on atria, developed in previous schools projects. Here they have learning spaces on several levels and open on to the landscape. The Quad is a vibrant gathering space over two levels, providing spaces for performance, social gathering, circulation and learning. We have been appointed as Exemplar Design architects, collaborating with Mouchel Parkman as technical architects, producing the working drawings and overseeing the project on site. We are designing the scheme using a single parametric modelling package, ArchiCAD, with 3D modelling as a starting point.
