Case Study Due date: September 20, 2012 A 2-in-OD stainless steel tube has 16 longitudinal fins around

its surface as shown. The fins are 1/16 inch thick and extend 1 inch from the outside surface of the tube.

a. If the outside of the tube wall is at 250F, the surrounding air is at 80F, and the convective heat transfer coefficient is 8Btu/h.ft2.F, determine the percent increase of heat transfer for the finned pipe over that of unfinned pipe. b. Determine the same information as in part (a) for values of h of 2, 5, 15, 20 and 100 Btu/h.ft2.F. Plot the percent increase in Q vs. h. What conclusion can you make concerning this plot? In order to further increase heat transfer, you propose to use aluminum fin arrangement. Please repeat the calculation of part a and part b. Information: k of stainless steel is 10 Btu/hr.F.ft and k of aluminum is 120 Btu/hr.F.ft.
