Nature Center Chooses Polished Concrete
NORRIS, TENN. The Ijams Nature Center in eastern Tennessee recently
recognized a need for a rejuvenation of its Visitor Center. The park de-
cided it wanted a more sustainable building. To ft with that idea, the park
opted for polished concrete fooring from Perfect Polish.
Ijams Nature Center had been searching for the right foor treatment
for its Visitor Center for many years one that would be afordable,
practical, improve the aesthetics and be easy to clean, said Paul James,
executive director of Ijams Nature Center. The new [polished concrete]
foors have dramatically improved the quality and feel of the Visitor
Center, particularly the exhibit hall which provides a new inspirational
foundation on which to build a new series of exhibits and enhancements.
Polished concrete fooring recycles existing concrete slabs to transform
them into fnished surfaces. It also provides such environmental benefts
as improved ambient lighting, no VOCs and reduced waste.

Chippewa Valley Dakota High School with its
Environmental Stewardship Award for the
schools commitment to recycling. Tandus
and Dakota High School worked with local
businesses to participate in this recycling
efort to reclaim approximately 4,000 yards of

Wakely Associates, Inc. Architects were the
local companies whose collaboration helped in
the success of the program.
We appreciate Tandus for providing us
with the opportunity to recycle the old foor-
ing as we install new in this facility, said Mr.
Jef Atkins of Barton Malow. It saves us from
contributing to the landflls and we can do
our part to help the environment and be a
green organization.
Since the inception of its closed-loop recy-
cling program, Tandus has diverted 145 million
pounds of carpet and waste materials from
landflls and incinerators, and turned it into 100
percent recycled content backing for its foor-
ing, the company reports.

project, we have developed a matrix of sustainable flooring options (see previous page).
Though by now most of HOKs designers know these sustainable attributes by heart, this ma-
trix streamlines our decision-making process. It helps to have one consolidated summary of the
benefts, challenges, special notes related to LEED points and cost information of each.
Guiding Decisions for Showroom
Our design team used the matrix to guide our decisions about the fooring for the new 20,000-
square-foot Allsteel/Gunlocke Resource Center at Chicagos Merchandise Mart. The fooring is a
combination of carpet tiles and resilient fooring.

For acoustic and cost reasons, most of the space uses C&A carpet tile
that is certifed as Green Label Plus by the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI).
To make the showrooms entry lobby a feature space, we used wood
reclaimed from the timber structures of barns in Indiana. In addition to
being a local and 100 percent recycled material, this end-grain fooring is
extremely durable and long-lasting, while providing a rich, warm fnish.
The showrooms back-of-house business center and pantry required
durable, hard surfaces. Capri Corks Cor-Terra rubber cork foor tiles, which
use recycled cork, were specifed.
Material Selection
Earlier this year, HOKs Chicago of ce moved into a new space on the
14th foor of downtowns CNA building. When we moved, we purged our
existing materials library. We then started over by requiring every manu-
facturer that wanted to submit a product to our new library to complete a
product evaluation form. On this form, which we share with the world at
http://hok.com/sustainable/resources, we asked questions to manu-
facturers about everything ranging from third-party certifcations and
standards to LEED applicability and product availability. A product was
not accepted into our library until we had assessed each submitted form
to ensure that it met our sustainability requirements. We were pleasantly
surprised to receive 100 percent compliance on this request.
As our firms designers specify various sustainable flooring materi-
als, we are sharing our experiences and exchanging information on
an online portal and using what we learn to continuously update the
sustainable flooring matrix.

In its frst full year of existence, the ANSI/NSF
140 2007 carpet sustainability standard earned
positive accolades and has flled a need in the
existing market.
NSF 140 is the comprehensive environ-
mental standard developed to help the de-
sign community identify carpet with reduced
environmental impact. NSF 140-2007 is the
frst multi-attribute ANSI-approved stan-
dard developed to identify environmentally
preferred building materials. The standard
evaluates products and manufacturers based
on performance in fve areas: public health
and the environment, energy and energy
ef ciency, bio-based and recycled content,
manufacturing, and reclamation and end-of-
life management.
Nine manufacturers have already achieved
certifcation under NSF 140, representing a total
of 28 approved product platforms. Beaulieu
Commercial, Bentley Prince Street, Interface-
FLOR, Mannington Mills, Masland Contract,
Milliken and Company, Shaw Industries, Tandus
and J+J|Invision each submitted detailed docu-
mentation and underwent exhaustive scrutiny in
order to achieve certifcation for their products.
Each product platform represents a group of
styles that share one or more similar charac-
teristics, such as a backing or fnishing system,
and each approved platform can represent
hundreds of carpet styles. To make it easier for
specifers to fnd NSF 140 approved products,
the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) has listed
them in a centralized registry on the CRI web-
site, carpet-rug.org. (https://www.carpet-rug.
org/carpet-and-rug-industry/sustainability/
sustainable-carpet/sustainable-carpet-list.cfm).
The NSF 140 Joint Committee has approved
a detailed guidebook, http://standards.nsf.
org/apps/group_public/download.php/4273/
NSF%20140-2007%20Guidance%20Manu-
al%200209.pdf. available online for manu-
facturers who are interested in starting the
certifcation process.
This summer, the NSF Joint Committee is
conducting the frst annual review of the NSF
140 standard to examine compliance and
consider proposed changes and additions to
the standard. Copies of the current approved
NSF 140 standard are available from the NSF
International Bookstore. http://www.nsf.org/
info/carpet.
In an exciting development for broadening the
acceptance and clout behind NSF 140, the Environ-
mental Protection Agency (EPA) is looking closely
at including NSF 140 in its recommendations for
federal comprehensive procurement guidelines
(CPGs) for nylon carpet. If the EPA does add NSF
140-certifed products to CPG suggested listings, it
will mark the frst time the agency has considered
a products entire environmental profle and overall
impact on sustainability and the environment in
their decision. Past recommendations were based
on recycled content alone. An answer is expected in
the next few months.

The amount of recycled content,
while undoubtedly important,
should not be the frst and
certainly not the only green
criteria when choosing carpet. An
important step should be consid-
ered before even thinking about
new foor covering: Whats going
to happen to the existing carpet?

Good for Our Planet;
Good for Business
Theres no questioning the facts
when it comes to the environ-
mental benefts of carpet recla-
mation. Carpet takes more than
50 years to begin to decompose
in a landfll. One square yard of
carpet weighs as much as the
amount of trash the average
American throws away each day.
Carpet accounts for 2 to 3 percent
of all landfll volume. For every
ton of carpet recycled, two tons of
CO
2
are prevented from entering
the atmosphere.
Reclaiming carpet can help
reduce a facilitys environmental
footprint in a number of ways. Ul-
timately, carpet manufacturers
will need to make carpet back
into carpet. In order to break our
dependency on petroleum-based
raw materials, manufacturers need
a steady supply of post-consumer
recycled carpet to add recycled
content to their products. More
recycling of carpet at the end of its
life means higher recycled content
in future products. This means its
everyones responsibility to help
close the loop.
Its also important to under-
stand that carpet reclamation
makes equally good business
sense. First, depending on the
region, it is actually less expensive
to recycle carpet than to send
it to a landfll. Even if the fees
arent itemized in the demoli-
tion contract, landfll costs are
expensive and rising rapidly
across the country. Depending on
the type of carpet being recycled,
reclamation can be free. In the
not-too-distant future, it is likely
that sending carpet to landflls
will no longer be an option, with
costly fnes for those who do.
Carpet reclamation may
contribute up to two points for
LEED-CI or LEED-EB certifcation in
the construction waste manage-
ment category. From an economic
perspective, LEED certifcation has
proven to reduce operating costs,
enhance asset value and profts,
improve employee productivity
and satisfaction, and optimize
life-cycle performance. A 2006
U.S. Green Building Council study
found that retroftting buildings to
achieve LEED certifcation saved an
average of 90 cents per square foot
in energy and other costs annually.

Its Easier Than You
Might Think
There was a time when carpet
reclamation was dif cult, time
consuming and expensive. No
more. The carpet industry has
been an aggressive proponent
of keeping its product out of
landflls and now provides numer-
ous solutions for managing waste
carpet whether turning old
carpet into new carpet, reusing
it in another setting, refurbish-
ing, or recycling fber into other
plastic products. Last year, for
example, Bentley Prince Street
alone recycled approximately 2.2
million pounds of carpet about
the weight of six Boeing 747s
through its ReEntry carpet
reclamation program.
The basic rule of carpet
reclamation is that the dealer or

based on 5 key factors: public health and environment; energy and energy efficiency; bio-based, recycled content
materials or environmentally preferable materials manufacturing; and reclamation and end-of-life management.

sible for its disposal. Dealers may be willing
to absorb part of the cost of reclamation if
there is one. Reclamation costs are typically
determined by the carpet material, the amount
of carpet, the logistics and the location.
Carpet manufacturers can help customers
fnd the best solution for either reusing or recy-
cling carpet. For example, Bentley Prince Street
coordinates onsite carpet disposal and, once
the bins are flled, it manages the complete
reclamation process.
Each reclamation program has diferent
specifcations for carpet disposal preparation.
While every program varies, generally carpet
tile should be palletized and shrink-wrapped;
broadloom should be rolled or cut into
strips. The carpet also must be dry, clean and
separated from other materials.
Another valuable resource for more
information is the Carpet America Recovery
Efort (CARE), a joint industry-government
efort to increase the amount of recycling and
reuse of post-consumer carpet and reduce
the amount of waste carpet going to landflls
(www.carpetrecovery.org).
Carpet reclamation can close the loop and,
in the process, green the planet and the bot-
tom line.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL (AND EASY) CARPET RECLAMATION
Plan and Budget Upfront. Work with your partners to develop a reclamation budget before you begin
specications, demo and installation.

Cost Your Options. Compare landll fees to reclamation costs, if any. Disposal fees often arent itemized; if you
dont see them broken out, ask.

List Reclamation in Project Specs. Make reclamation part of your bid requirements or project specications.

Include Reclamation in Your New Carpet Deal. Most carpet manufacturers have reclamation programs. For
example, Bentley Prince Street recycles vinyl-backed carpet tile free of charge and partners with dealers to
lower recycling costs for facility managers.

Develop a Construction Waste Management Policy. Formalize your reclamation procedures with a
construction waste management policy that requires contractors to recycle their construction waste.

Dont Forget Documentation. Require proof of carpet reclamation from your dealer or carpet manufacturer that
lists the project and amount of carpet reclaimed.

Known for its excellent ftness
club programs and facilities,
Equinox has been named the
best in America by Fitness Maga-
zine. For 14 years running, New
York Magazine has awarded the
club its highest honor as Best of
New York.
Nationwide, Equinox (www.
equinoxftness.com) has more
than 40 clubs dotting the land-
scape, and its upscale facilities
are a familiar sight in New York
City, Los Angeles, San Francisco,
Boston, Chicago, Miami and,
now, Manhattan.
Environmental products and
strategies such as FGS PermaShine,
L&M Construction Chemicals pat-
ented dry concrete foor polishing
process, have helped put the latest
Equinox club in Manhattan, West
Chelsea, on solid footing.
Green Specications
The new club is housed at ground
level within The Caledonia, a 26-
story residential complex directly
across the street from the fabled
Chelsea Market and a quarter-
mile from the Hudson River. When
it came to putting down roots in
Chelsea, Equinox knew just what
it was after a spacious, elegant,
user-friendly facility that would
draw raves from patrons and de-
velop a well-deserved following
through word-of-mouth.
And, it had to be green.
To that end, Equinox assembled
a team, a lineup that included its
senior director of construction,
Khidir Abdalla; the architectural
frm of Platt Byard Dovell White;
the general contractor, Plaza
Construction Corporation; and
FGS installer, Matt Johnson and
his team at Savaspace, the con-
crete fooring solutions company
located in Westchester, N.Y.
Johnson and Savaspace were
entrusted with the look and feel
of the club and responsible for

the placement, dying and installation on the
8,500 square feet of polished concrete floor
that greets visitors when they walk through
the door.
Its all part of making a good impression,
Johnson said. I dont think they left anything
to chance. For the foors for the entire
project they wanted a real Chelsea feel to it.
They were looking for something with a sense
of history. I think we got it just right.
Equinox made its green intentions clear up
front, setting out to design a project with sus-
tainable features from top to bottom. Johnson
was thinking along those same lines, as well,
having recently established the Green Earth
Floor Company, whose motto is Changing the
world, one foor at a time.
To change the world at Equinox, Johnson
went with FGS PermaShine, topped of by
L&Ms Vivid Dye Concrete Coloring System.
Its tried, true and tested, Johnson said
of the system. Equinox wanted to create an
ambience to harmonize with their philosophy;
they didnt want to use anything hazardous.
They, like Savaspace, are very environmentally
conscious. So, PermaShine was perfect for
the project. It worked out well; our clients are
always pleased with how it turns out.
And Equinox was no exception.
Weve gotten nothing but positive feed-
back, said Equinoxs Abdalla. We were very
particular about what we were looking for in
the foor fnish and this ft the bill. It was just
what we were looking for.
Polishing, Coloring and
Maintaining the Floor
The PermaShine system starts with a dry
diamond grinding process of the floors,
followed in turn by a high-performance
vacuum system that all but eliminates
airborne dust throughout both the grinding
and polishing stages.
After grinding and polishing, the surface, while
appearing shiny, has become quite porous. In

order to protect the surface, the foor must be chemically hardened. L&Ms
FGS Hardener Plus, an odorless and non-toxic solution, hardens and densifes
the polished concrete. It chemically reacts with weaker concrete ingredients
and forms a strong, durable crystalline formation that provides the concrete
its added strength and long-term wear resistance.
Maintaining the foor over its lifetime is relatively simple when com-
bining the FGS Hardener Plus with Joint Tite 750, L&Ms rapid-setting
polyurea joint material, and FGS Concrete Conditioner. Joint Tite 750
prevents deterioration of unflled joint edges, providing a clean and
safe joint edge, while FGS Concrete Conditioner ensures a low-cost,
easy-to-maintain foor surface. Routine maintenance is managed with
FGS Concrete Conditioner, which delivers a leading-edge degreaser
and cleaning agent while simultaneously reinforcing the foors
strength with the additional protection of its proprietary chemical
hardening agents.
Johnson and his Savaspace team came in on schedule at Equinox,
grinding and polishing the main foor and a second, slightly higher eleva-
tion three feet above the frst.
The foors were then colored with the L&M Vivid Concrete Dye, a post-
hardening concrete coloration system thats both practical and visually
compelling. L&M currently ofers 24 separate translucent colors in the
vivid dye system with intensities ranging from 25 to 100 percent, which
ofers a myriad of color possibilities.
Vivid Concrete Dye is formulated to use a fast-drying, VOC-exempt sol-
vent (acetone). The acetone present during the application of Vivid Dye
products evaporates within minutes of spraying and does not contribute
to urban smog conditions, the company reports. This formula complies
with South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule #1168
and does not exceed the VOC content limits established in SCAQMD Rule
#1113, Architectural Coatings.
Sustainable Results
Bill McGrath of New Yorks Plaza Construction Corporation was the proj-
ect director on Equinox overseeing the 18 weeks of construction for the
general contractor. Hes understandably proud of the fnal result.
The foor turned out beautifully, McGrath said. It has a nice overall
look and feel to it, something we can all be proud of. Its all part of the
bigger, greener picture.
Plaza Construction itself has long been an industry leader on the
green front. From start to fnish, Equinox was a model of sustainable de-
sign, built with an eye toward energy and water savings, and a healthy
overall environment.
Equinox comes equipped with low-energy, high-output lights outftted
with smart panels and controls. The heat pumps, which help control the
temperature, are hydrochlorofuorocarbon-free. Flow-reducing controls
decrease water usage by 80 percent compared with similar facilities.
Air quality is addressed in a number of ways. Wood products are form-
aldehyde free, and all paints, sealants and chemicals emit no toxic fumes.
Carbon monoxide detectors and flters also contribute to the overall
health of the club.
One of Equinoxs most striking features is its Living Wall of green
vegetation that converts carbon dioxide into oxygen and acts as a natural
sound barrier.
Every little bit helps according to Equinoxs Abdalla.
You cant do things the old way, Abdalla said. This is the future.
Everybody better get on board. This is how things are going to be done
from now on. And, as they say, if youre not part of the solution, youre
part of the problem.

Whats so sustainable about hard-
wood foors? There is no simple
answer. So, lets begin with an ac-
cepted defnition of the popular
term sustainable.
Our government defnes
sustainable as to create and
maintain conditions under which
humans and nature can exist in
productive harmony, that permit
fulflling the social, economic and
other requirements of present and
future generations of Americans.
Now lets concentrate on the
facts surrounding hardwood:
Hardwoods are the botanical
group of trees that have broad
leaves, produce a fruit or nut
and generally go dormant in the
winter. Requiring a temperate cli-
mate, most hardwood forestland
is in the eastern half of the U.S.
In North American hardwood
forestry, the predominant
harvesting method is single-tree
selection. By carefully remov-
ing individual trees, openings in
the forest canopy are created so
that more precipitation, sunlight
and nutrients reach the forest
foor. A trained forester individu-
ally selects trees for harvesting,
and a crew removes the trees
with the least disruption to the
forest foor. This responsible
forest management takes into
consideration long-term timber
production while also addressing
water quality, wildlife habitat,
biodiversity, forest aesthetics and
recreational opportunities.
According to the U.S. Depart-
ment of Agriculture Forest Service,
nearly twice as much hardwood
grows each year as is harvested,
and in the past 50 years, the vol-
ume of hardwood in North Ameri-
can forests has nearly doubled.
The trees reproduce naturally and
prolifcally. Foresters work with
the timeline that nature dictates
sustained supply and ongoing
replenishment are the result.
Healthy forests are net
producers of oxygen, thanks to
photosynthesis. Growing trees
take carbon dioxide from the
atmosphere and separate the
carbon and oxygen atoms. Trees
use carbon to grow roots, trunk,
branches and leaves (a tree uses
1.47 pounds of carbon diox-
ide to grow a pound of wood)
then returns the oxygen to the
air (giving of 1.07 pounds of
oxygen). This process reduces
greenhouse gases in the atmo-
sphere. An acre of trees can re-
move about 13 tons of dust and
gases from the atmosphere.
Additionally, wood requires a
very small amount of energy to
become fooring, and advanced
technology and responsible
manufacturing assures the least
wood waste.
Q Tree bark becomes mulch and
soil conditioners;
Q Sawdust is sold for animal
bedding or fuels the boilers
that operate dry kilns;
Q Trimmings are chipped and
processed into paper and
other products;
Q Small wood pieces are
processed or fnger-jointed
into wood components.
Research Afrms
Hardwood Flooring
The Consortium for Research on
Renewable Industrial Materials
(CORRIM) conducted a gate-
to-gate, life-cycle inventory of
solid strip hardwood fooring
manufactured in the eastern
United States. The information
obtained from the study was
used to compare solid strip
hardwood fooring with popular
alternatives: vinyl composition
tile, linoleum, nylon carpet tile,
and wool carpet tile
1
.
The CORRIM study concluded:
Less total energy is required to
produce a hardwood foor than
other fooring; hardwood foors
have no emissions for methane,
nitrogen oxides and other particu-
late matter and minimal emissions
for carbon dioxide; and hardwood
fooring is carbon neutral.
With independent research
af rming hardwoods as being
carbon negative and rating systems
expanding their certifcation of
more and more forests, hardwoods
are at the forefront of sustainable
fooring products and materials.
As the design-build industry works
toward the goal of carbon-neutral
buildings by 2030, the abundant
and naturally self-renewing supply
of North American hardwoods look
to play a prominent role in making
that goal a reality.
Founded in 1993, the Harwood Council
is a coalition of hardwood lumber and
product associations along with com-
panies and individuals interested in
promoting the use of North American
hardwood. For more information on
the Hardwood Council, please visit

Although carpet covers more
than 70 percent of the foors in
homes and workplaces in the
United States, several myths
about whether it is an appropri-
ate choice for green buildings
persist. Misinformation stems
from misconceptions, partial facts
and outdated sources. A few of
the more prevalent statements
are exposed below.
Recycled content is the single
standard for sustainable carpet.
As with any product selection, a
holistic approach requires consid-
eration of materials, production,
design and end-of-life alterna-
tives. Content is only one factor.
Multi-attribute certifcation like
the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) Sustainable Carpet
Assessment Standard NSF-140
and SMaRT from Sustainable Prod-
ucts Corporation are examples.
Carpet does not represent
a sustainable choice for green
buildings. Carpet balances design
aesthetics and performance met-
rics to support high performance
green buildings with sustainable
materials produced in an earth-
minded manner ofering durability,
reclamation and sound reduction
among other benefts. Modular
carpet may be installed without
onsite adhesives to eliminate VOCs.
Green buildings and related
products cost more. Accord-
ing to the Alliance for Sustain-
able Built Environments, green
buildings are designed, built,
renovated, operated or reused in
ways that not only save energy
and money but also provide
healthier workplaces. At least
one study estimates that the cost
savings generated by construc-
tion or renovation to attain LEED
improvements pay back the origi-
nal investment ten times over the
life of the building.
Products are too hard to fnd.
The sources for green product
information, including carpet,
have mushroomed in the past
three years. In addition to manu-
facturers, information is available
on certifcation sites like NSF and
MTS, green building publications
and professional organizations
like IIDA and IFMA.
Carpet cannot support
healthy interiors. Carpet may be
wrongly blamed for contributing
to asthma and allergies and for
emitting high levels of volatile
organic compounds (VOCs). Some
studies (such as Carpet, Asthma
and Allergies - Myth or Reality
by Mitchell W. Sauerhof, Ph.D.,
DABT) have shown that carpet
is better at trapping allergens
than hard surfaces because
carpet fbers catch particles and
allergens that fall to the foor.
Properly maintained carpet may
lead to improved air quality and
a healthier indoor environment.
The American Lung Association
approves Carpet and Rug Institute
(CRI) Green Label carpet for use
in its Healthy Homes program,
and Green Label carpet exceeds
the green building requirements
dictated by California schools.
Carpet cannot be recycled or
reused. Carpet, which is really an
assembly of parts in the face fbers
and backing systems, is engineered
for reuse. To drastically reduce the
amount of carpet going to landflls,
the carpet industry is recycling
carpet waste into new carpet and
carpet-related products and sup-
porting markets for products made
of spent carpet. Since its inception in
2002, the nonproft Carpet America
Recovery Efort (CARE) has overseen
at least 500 million pounds of used
carpet diverted from landflls. A 40
percent target for 2012 means recy-
cling or reusing 2.8 billion pounds.
The CRI 2008 Sustainability Report
ofers industry data.
Carpet is not manufactured
in a sustainable manner.
Production modifcations use
greener chemistries with bio-
degradable materials. Advances
in technology permit life-cycle
assessments to engineer more
durable products using fewer
resources. Using alternative
energy and attaining zero waste
have been achieved by some and
continue to be goals for others.
In selecting carpet, choose
wisely to achieve the best perfor-
mance for your green building.
Consider not only the type of fa-
cility but also the specifc area for
the installation, the anticipated
life cycle, the design aesthetics
and the expected traf c.
