Lesson Pre test

Integrated subjects ICT

Lesson description In the introductory lesson students complete an online survey that assesses the time they dedicate to physical activity and to screens. The survey also asks students their thoughts on how much time they need to be physical active and how much time they should spend looking at screens. The results and findings of the survey are to be used to initiate a classroom discussion of the physical activity and screen time that they engage in. This lesson delivers the National Physical Activity Guidelines (NPAG) to students. Students construct a physical activity pyramid to gain understanding on how to balance the activities they partake in in order to achieve health-related fitness. Students take an artistic approach. In this lesson student brainstorm and look at different physical activities they participate and new activities available to them to improve their health related fitness. The term screen time is introduced and alternatives to sedentary activities are prepared. Students construct and begin a journal to investigate their daily screen time and physical activity. Students design and create a graph or class tally to measure the class screen time and physical activity over time. Regularly, students add their physical activity and screen time durations to the class total. Students make a comparison of the effects of both screen time and physical activity. Cause and effect is referred to in this lesson. Students take a walk around the local community to discover available health services and facilities. Students design a brochure promoting health support in the local community. This lesson is student centred with the aim of promoting the needs of physical activity and the awareness of screen time. Possible leads to this lesson may include poster making for the school and at home with positive cues and reminders. Students complete the online survey again as a form of post testing. Class discussion includes what changes students have made and what changes they still need to make. These ideas are transformed through goal setting and the development of a classroom contract.
