HERStory: A Poetry Workshop for Native Women and Girls

HERStory are full-day workshops for Native women and girls interested in expanding their voice through the written word. It is designed as part of the Emerging Writers Workshops, a series of workshops that connect emerging writers of all ages to published Native American authors and educators. Our monthly workshops, are facilitated by award winning Abenaki poet and writer Cheryl Savageau, and bring Native women and girls together to learn techniques of poetry and prose as a way to share stories of personal experiences, our communities, and the land. Participants who are already in the process of writing will have a chance to get responses to their writing, and women and girls who have not written before will learn how to tell their stories to the page. She has won Fellowships in Poetry from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Artists Foundation. Her second book of poetry, Dirt Road Home, was a finalist for the Paterson Prize, and was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Her children's book, Muskrat Will Be Swimming, was named a Notable Children's Book by Smithsonian Magazine, and won the Skipping Stones Award for Exceptional Multicultural and Ecological Children's Books. Savageau has also received a Writer of the Year in Children's Literature from Wordcraft Circle of Native Writers and Storytellers, as well as their Mentor of the Year Award. Her poetry is widely anthologized. Her most recent book of poetry is Mother/Land.
