The club was non-existent for a short period of time, but is now getting a fresh start with co-presidents Parker Cotton and Ben Welch. The clubs advisor, Lynn Klyde-Silverstein, is also playing a big role in getting UNC SPJ back on the scene. Cotton, who is also a sports editor at The Mirror, is extremely passionate about getting the club back into gear. We hope to involve people who love doing what theyre doing. I have a strong passion for news-editorial journalism and I hope to share that with the club, Cotton said. The club has had Randy Bangert, the editor of The Greeley Tribune, and Gregory Moore, the editor of The Denver Post, come in to speak at club meetings. The club has also put together a panel for Sunshine Week, a national week for journalism that emphasizes the open governtment and freedom of information, in the Spring of 2009. MORE

Backgrounder 2 UNC SPJs main focus and mission is to uphold the First Amendment, to practice ethical behavior in journalism and to encourage and inspire young journalists.
