AUTUMN 2012

THE CHAPEL is a ministry of welcome and hospitality committed to helping tear down the wall of suspicion between the church and the arts and music communities. THE CHAPEL is a ministry of Memorial Presbyterian Church. Artists are never charged; they always take home the full door (cover) charge, and the drinks are always free.

BEGINNING WITH JAZZ

On 1/13/2012 the 2012 Chapel season kicked off with The Jeff Riley Jazz Suite http://www.jeffrileyjazzsuite.org/

Since taking leadership of The Chapel a year ago, what response have you seen to this ministry? You know, the artists weve served have really been astonished. They express extreme gratitude to The Chapel and to the church. And they have been very open to relationship. What has been your experience as the Director? It has been lots of work, but its also been very rewarding. I find a lot of joy and excitement in being able practically and vitally to bless local artists. I get the opportunity to engage, support, encourage and befriend artists and patrons alike, most of whom do not yet know the grace of Christ. What has been the experience for staff and volunteers? I think for most of the volunteers, this ministry has been pretty relaxed, enjoyable, much easier than they expected, and with the opportunity to do something new. How can we pray for the ministry? To begin with, join us in thanking God for this amazing space, for all of the equipment and resources, for the continued support from Memorial Presbyterian Church, for the volunteers and staff, for the long-term relationships weve developed with local artists like Javier, Chamber Project, Autumns Child, Andy Conrad, Slightly Askew Theatre Ensemble, Tin Ceiling Theatre and others. Pray for all of these. We want to manifest Gods welcome to all. What needs do you have? A few more volunteer staff could really help us to better serve these artists. We would love a communications director. (Dianna Thomas was before my time. But people still speak about how awesome she was.) We could use a volunteer coordinator to help keep our volunteers in the loop about service opportunities. And wed love someone to make it their ministry to haul off the recycling from time to time. We could also use another music venue coordinator. Id love to see a committed core of twelve new volunteers willing to invest a few hours each month in gospel empowered service. Id love to see folks who are open to friendship with artists. Though we don't engage in direct evangelism through the Chapel, I have had many great conversations with patrons and artists. How can people contact you? If youre at Memorials Saturday service, you can usually grab me. Or just can email me at chapelvenue@gmail.com.

EXCITING PLANS FOR 2013!

One of the Chapels goals for next year is to developwith direction and support from Memorials Sessiona separate Board of Advisors or perhaps even a Board of Directors. Memorials main role in supporting the Chapel has always been the generous hospitality the church shows in providing such an amazing space. But we would like to envision an expanded ministry, one involving members of other churches and involving friends at the seminary and beyond. That means we hope to transition some support roles from Memorial church staff to an expanded core of leaders and volunteers. Please pray with us as we plan for sustainable ministry of service and hospitality to the arts community in St. Louis!
