Victorian Bride Superstitions

Brides were just as superstitious about days of the week. A popular rhyme goes:

Marry on Monday for health, Tuesday for wealth, Wednesday the best day of all, Thursday for crosses,

Friday for losses, and

Saturday for no luck at all.
Colour of the gown was thought to influence one's future life, which I will be considering when choosing the colours for the room and the objects within it.

White--chosen right
Blue--love will be true Yellow--ashamed of her fellow Red--wish herself dead Black--wish herself back Grey--travel far away Pink--of you he'll always think Green-ashamed to be seen

Bell Jars and Tear Catchers

Bell Jars
Bell jars are a piece of laboratory equipment that is typically used to preserve flora, fauna etc. In the Victorian era they were used as decorative pieces, usually displaying time pieces such as clocks and taxidermy. Taking this into consideration and the fact that Miss Havisham has frozen time setting the clocks at twenty to nine I think it would be a great representation to display a number of clocks within the bell jars symbolising this and the fact she is preserving her heartbreak.

Tear Catchers
Tear jars/catchers were popular among the wealthy Victorians and were used to catch the tears of the grieving. Once the tears were caught they left the jar open and let the tears evaporate this stated how long they were to be in morning for. If they were tears of joy they would leave the stoppers in to keep their happiness.

Within the scene I will have a number of tear jars scattered around the room, most
uncovered, yet some that maintain the stoppers this again will emphasis Miss Havishams heartbreak is still on going, as if shes holding onto her misery to stay connected to the man she once loved.
