Cabalian Church (Cabalian Southern Leyte, Philippines)

In 1616, Cabalian was founded by the Jesuits. In 1629, slaving raid ruined the town. On 10 August 1645, the Jesuit Juan Domingo (Giovanni Domenico Aressu) was killed in Cabalian, a victim of the same troubles. In contrast, his fellow Jesuit Juan Bautista Lanauri saved his life during a raid in 1663 by hiding in Cabalian. On 13 January 1861, it was raised to the status of parish in accordance with a decree of 15 September 1860, separating it from Malitbog. The architectural history of Cabalian is sketchy, although Redondo (1886, 203) reports that the church was made of wood with posts and walls of wood. The present church traces to the initiative of the secular clergy. It is a handsome church and a tribute to its builder who enscribed his name on the faade. source: http://www.admu.edu.ph/offices/mirlab/panublion/r8_leytesouth.html#cabalian
