After building his family home, a master carpenter once said, I feel like Im building this home not for me, but for my grandchildren and their children. What a wonderful perspective that our choices are not just about us, but they also lay the foundation for generations to come.

This philosophy is also true for the children who come to Eagle Ranch. Their willingness to work on painful and difficult issues will impact far more than their own lives. This year, during one of my talks with the boys and girls, I said, In the end, its really not all about you. Needless to say, a hush quickly fell over the group. I went on to explain how the decisions theyre making now will influence their own future, their families, and even what kind of husband and father or wife and mother they will eventually be. Creating awareness for our children beyond their own experience gives them a healthier, more realistic perspective on their own lives and those they will touch. Eagle Ranch provides a Christ-centered home for boys and girls in crisis and in need of hope and healing. Partnering with their families, we pursue family restoration and reunification. We seek to influence and equip others who share a similar calling to impact children, families and future generations.

Getting a new bike was a surprise and an honor. Ive never had an experience like that before. A few days after we got them, we took them on a ride. You barely have to pedal. Ive never had a bike with gears I was like whoa! It was so much fun!

A Christmas
The Christmas season brought a special surprise for the children of Eagle Ranch. Sixteen new mountain bikes, complete with helmets and accessories were presented to excited boys and girls. Shane Sullards, a 1993 Eagle Ranch graduate and founder of Lapdog Development Group, worked with 25 vice presidents from Atlanta-based Assurant Specialty Property on a bike-building team exercise. After they had completed the project, the participants learned that their bikes would be given to the Ranch. That was where it went from a teambuilding exercise to a powerful experience, said Jennifer Hale, Assurant vice president of Talent Development and Performance. It brought home the value of helping others. Our team found it to be a really special, moving experience to help the kids of Eagle Ranch.

Surprise
The Assurant teams were thrilled that children would benefit from their hard work, and within hours upon the events completion, participants raised more than $4,000, which Assurant then matched. The bikes will stay in great shape thanks to the generosity of Adventure Cycles in Braselton, which donated maintenance and repairs. Many of the homes now take group bike rides, which was never possible before, noted Eagle Ranch assistant counselor Chase Hyder. There are great paths and places to explore on our 270 acres, so the bikes enable quality outdoor time for the boys and girls. Rachel, an Eagle Ranch seventh grader, got to test ride one of the bikes. We met the people with the company and they asked me what color I liked. I said, purple. They showed me a white bike that had purple on it, and I thought, Thats awesome. They were excited to see kids get bikes that might not have ever had one before.

A Falcons Story of Faith

Atlanta Falcons fullback Michael Cox (#42) took time out of his busy playoff schedule to surprise the students at Eagle Ranch School. Cox shared the inspiring story of his journey to becoming an NFL player. He was faced with many setbacks and disheartening obstacles along the way but, through faith and perseverance, was able to reach his dreams.

It stood out to me how difficulties were thrown his way and he still kept going.

Also, I thought that all football teams hated each other, but he said his team prays together before every game and they even pray for the other team. Clara Mae had a soft place for children. She never had any of her own, nor did Carmel and I. So its nice to be able

When you meet Carmel and Cecil Blackstock, you know they have spent a life well lived. A sense of history, peace and satisfaction fills the home near Talmo where they have spent the last 49 years. The modest home is also where Cecil was born and raised. Family lines run deep in Northeast Georgia for the couple. Cecils family had enough land that the road where he lives even bears the family name. Carmel, whose maiden name is McEver, was born and raised on family land passed down through generations in Jackson County. Carmel grew up with her parents and her older sister Clara Mae. Just 14 months apart, the sisters were close. We grew cotton and corn on the land and worked in the fields, recalled Carmel. When she was 41, Carmel moved out when she married Cecil. Clara Mae was the last family member to live on the Jackson County land, and when she passed away in 2004, she left the land to Carmel. She and I talked a lot about Eagle Ranch, recalled Carmel. Weve sent a lot of donations up to the Ranch, and Clara Mae had too. She said if Cecil and I didnt need the land, she wanted us to pass it on to Eagle Ranch. The McEver homestead sat on nearly 44 acres of property in Jackson County. Carmel and Cecil regularly tended to it, but it needed repairs and an attempted theft got the couple thinking. Cecil noted, We took inventory and decided what we had was enough. We figured wed rather give it to the Ranch while we are alive to see that happen.

We just decided we would do it now not wait until we died. We thought we could manage with what we had here and wouldnt have to have it. We wanted to honor Clara Maes plans, so we went ahead and did it, added Carmel.

Clara Mae had a soft place for children, said Cecil. She never had any children, nor did Carmel and I. So its nice to be able to help children. They met with Eddie Staub the day after Christmas in 2011 to offer the land to the Ranch. You should have seen the look on Eddies face when we told him we were going to give him that land, laughed Cecil. He was really surprised! Eddie was thrilled to have the gift and grateful for the Blackstocks generosity. I think Carmel and Cecil enjoyed giving and seeing Clara Maes legacy being realized, he said. In a soft real estate market, Eddie thought the Ranch may have the property for some time. But as the Ranchs needs grew, God once again provided. Cecil mentioned a couple who owned land next to the property, noted Eddie. We found out that they too were Eagle Ranch donors and were very interested in purchasing the land. The deal fell into place in Cecil and Carmel Blackstock April 2012, closing at a fair with Clara Mae. price without paying any real estate fees.It was Claras desire, said Cecil. We dont need much. We have enough.

An Inside Look at Planned Gifts

Q: What is a planned gift? Planned gifts are an intentional, proactive effort, on the part of a donor, to give money to an organization either during their life or upon their passing. There are three types of planned gifts: Outright gifts that use appreciated assets, such as stocks or real estate Gifts that return income or other financial benefits to the donor in return for the contribution Gifts payable upon the donors passing Q: What are some examples of planned gifts? Many people think of a planned gift as a bequest in a will, but there are many varieties of planned gifts: gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, land, homes and other assets. Planned gifts can be structured in many different ways. A couple recently contacted us with a beautiful home in the mountains of North Carolina they wanted to give. This gift provided these donors with an income tax deduction and Eagle Ranch benefited from the proceeds of the sale. Q: Why are planned gifts important to Eagle Ranch?

Planned giving is a significant part of Eagle Ranchs privately funded budget. Eagle Ranch Board Member Dave Polstra, a financial advisor with Brightworth, provides some insight into why and how you may find a planned gift a rewarding way to help change a childs future.

HONOR GIFTS

Financial integrity is a pillar of Eagle Ranch. Since its founding in the 1980s, it has remained a debt-free organization. The Ranch budget has grown significantly since its days of being one home with eight boys. Planned gifts continue to be a source of blessings to ensure the childrens needs are always met. Many Ranch supporters will never forget the story of Madge Moon, a woman who lived a modest and frugal life, who blessed the Ranch in 2010 with a gift in her will that literally made the difference in the Ranch being able to meet its budget for that year. Q: I know Eagle Ranch is privately funded, but where does the money come from? Private funding comes from a variety of sources. Community foundations and corporations provide nearly a quarter of the Ranchs budget, while individuals provide for almost half of it. The Eagle Ranch Foundation uses funds in an endowment to provide further operational support. More than $2 million in planned gifts have been given over the past five years, ranging from bequests in wills to gifts of land and other assets.
