Fixing Run-On Sentences

The Four Ways to Fix Run-On Sentences: Punctuation and Capital, Comma and FANBOYS, Semicolon, & Make One Independent Clause Dependent

A Run-On Sentence
Two complete sentences smashed together without any punctuation

EX: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders she lost her voice.

Punctuation and Capital


Make each independent clause a new sentence FIX: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders she lost her voice.

A Solution: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders! She lost her voice.

Comma and FANBOYS


Insert a comma and conjunction between the two independent clauses FIX: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders she lost her voice.

A Solution: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders, so she lost her voice.

Semicolon
Join the two independent clauses with a semicolon (;) FIX: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders she lost her voice.

Solution: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders; she lost her voice.

Make One Independent Clause Dependent


Rewrite one of the independent clauses, so it becomes a dependent clause, thus creating a complex sentence!

FIX: Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders she lost her voice. A Solution: Because Josie loudly cheered on the Raiders, she lost her voice.
