POLICY : HOMEWORK
Aim
The aim of the policy is to:
• To raise achievement
• Encourage students to become independent learners
• To reinforce the work taught in class
The school regards homework as an integral part of its academic programme both for the extra
work which it affords and for the disciplined, methodical approach to study which it promotes.
At the beginning of each academic year, every student is issued with a Planner. This allows
the student to record subject homework and it is regularly inspected by the Form Tutor and
Year Leader and the parents/guardians of the student.
Homework is set every day. Students in Year 7 are expected to spend 20-30 minutes per
subject per evening. Students in Year 8 should spend 30 minutes approximately per subject
per evening. Students in Year 9 should spend 40 minutes per subject per evening.
A homework timetable for each year group is provided by the Assistant Director Curriculum at
the beginning of each academic year.
All types of homework are equally valuable and every task must be completed thoroughly.
Students must record homework tasks in their planner and complete them by the target date.
We expect parents to support and supervise their son/daughter’s homework in the following
ways:
2. Ensure that your child has a quiet, comfortable space in which to work free from
distractions, e.g. television, radio or small children.
3. Inspect your son/daughter’s work and his/her planner every day to encourage good
standards of organisation and presentation.
4. Sign the planner every week and make a comment if you wish.
To assist students in study, homework clinics have been for after school for each year group;
subject based classes for Years 10 and 11. All students are expected to attend at least 2
evenings per week.
