Cable Modem

Vinod & Appu Intern 01-02-13

Cable Modem

It provides bi-directional data communication via radio frequency channels on a hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) cables. Frequency division multiplexing is used to incorporate the different channels. Here,
At the cable head end CMTS(Cable Modem Termination System encapsulates the internet IP packets according to Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). CMTS then modulates this into a TV channel (above the normal TV band) suitable for transmission over HFC. This is then combined with the TV channels. This is divided at the CPE and respective bands are fed to cable and to TV.

Cable modem..

In the cable modem the downstream data is retrieved by reversing the above process. In CPE the upstream is also encapsulated and is modulated in such a way to occupy the band below normal TV channels. The spacing of upstream and downstream in a cable transmission is shown below.

Upstream and Downstream are space in this way on the assumptions that downstream traffic is much more than that of upstream.

Disadvantages

Any data sent from the server is sent to every user on the cable network.
The

customer's network connection decides which data meant to each customer. Thus there is a probability that the users data could be viewed by a third party.

Since the bandwidth is shared to all the users, the band width available to each user will vary as the number of users vary.
