ELECTROCHEMISTRY

Definition of pH
- Defined as the concentration of hydrogen ions - Defined as the negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration

pH = - log [H+] --------- acidic pOH = - log [OH-] ---------- base

Acidic and basic are two extremes that describe a chemical property. - Mixing acids and bases can cancel out or neutralize their extreme effects.

pH scale
-The pH scale, (0 - 14), is the full set of pH numbers

which indicate the concentration of H+ and OH-ions in water.

-pH scale measures how acidic or basic a substance is -The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14. A pH of 7 is neutral. A pH less than 7 is acidic. A pH greater than 7 is basic.

Buffer
- Solutions that resist changes in pH
