In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I've been turning over in my mind

ever since.. "Whenever you feel like criticizing any one," he told me, "just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had." He didn't say any more, but we've always been unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I understood that he meant a great deal more than that. In consequence, I'm inclined to reserve all judgments Hypocrisy/Deception, and Honesty/Dishonesty: Although Nick states himself to reserve judgments of people, he frequently does make judgments of people. He might not say them aloud, but he says them, nonetheless. Jordan Baker instinctively avoided clever shrewd men and now I saw that this was because she felt safer on a plane where any divergence from a code would be thought impossible. She was incurably dishonest. She wasn't able to endure being at a disadvantage, and given this unwillingness I suppose she had begun dealing in subterfuges when she was very young in order to keep that cool, insolent smile turned to the world and yet satisfy the demands of her hard jaunty body. It made no difference to me. Dishonesty in a woman is a thing you never blame deeply--I was casually sorry, and then I forgot. It was on that same house party that we had a curious conversation about driving a car. It started because she passed so close to some workmen that our fender flicked a button on one man's coat. Honesty/Dishonesty and Hypocrisy/Deception: This quote illuminates that Jordan is dishonest and careless with everything. However, in another exercise of Deception, Nick does not even make a judgment on that. While at least he is not contradicting himself, his feelings for her lead him to deceive himself into thinking that its alright. "You see?" cried Catherine triumphantly. She lowered her voice again. "It's really his wife that's keeping them apart. She's a Catholic and they don't believe in divorce." Daisy was not a Catholic and I was a little shocked at the elaborateness of the lie. Honesty/Dishonesty and Hypocrisy/Deception: This is an obvious lie, or deception, on Catherines part. Daisy isnt Catholic, and Tom would never marry Myrtle, even if she was alive.
