Figure 1.3: A typical excel worksheet Familiarizing with the Excel Workbook Row: This is a horizontal set of points or vertices defined by numbers from 1 to 20,000+ Column: This is a vertical set of points or vertices defined by alphabets from A to ZZ Cell: A typical cell is a box created by the intersection of a row and column denoted on the formula bar by any alphabet (as prefix) and number (as suffix) e.g. A1, B2, C3, , Z50 Worksheet: This is an individual sheet which comprises of several cells.
Workbook: This is made up of individual worksheets. 1.4 How to Input Data in a cell > Place your cursor on any part of the worksheet, then click > Input your data Exercise: students are allowed to launch and identify the various parts of a typical Excel workbook
2.1 Mathematical Function 2.1.1 Let us solve a simple linear equation: 2X + Y = Z for values of -4 <= X < 4 for integers of Y, calculate the values of Z. Solution: 1: Create four columns defined by the elements of the equation (as shown below)
Fig. 2.1.1a: Solving simple linear equation 2: Input your respective X and Y values into columns A and C respectively 3: To calculate 2X > Formula Bar (Input B2 = 2 * A2 into the formula bar) 4: To calculate Z on Column D > Formula Bar (Input the equation as an expression assigned to Column D, D2 = B2 + C2)
5: To plot the values of X, Y and Z as given in the expression above > Insert (on the formatting toolbar) as shown in Figure 2.1.1b:
