Assignment -3 Slender Column

1. Define slender column and explain the roles and importance of additional moments due to P- effect and moments due to minimum eccentricities in slender column? 2. What is Eulers load. Explain behavior of slender column in following conditions: Subjected to concentric loading Under axial load and uniaxial bending, bent in single & double curvature Portal frame both braced and unbraced

3. Determine the reinforcement required for a braced column against sidesway with the following data: Size of column = 350 x 450 mm, Grade of concrete and steel = M 30 and Fe 415 Effective lengths lex and ley = 7 and 6 m respectively; Unsupported length l = 8 m; Factored load Pu = 1700 kN; Factored moment in the direction of larger dimension = 70 kNm at top & 30 kNm at bottom;

The column is bent in double curvature. Reinforcement will be distributed equally four sides.

4. Check the column shown in figure, if subjected to an axial factored load of Pu = 1500 kN only when the unsupported length of the column =l=8 m, lex =ley=6 m, D=400 mm, b =300mm, using concrete of M 20 and steel grade in Fe 415.
