INTRODUCTION OF WTO
WTO was formed on 1st Jan,1995. It took over GATT (General agreement on tariffs & trade). In 8th round of GATT, popularly known as Uruguay Round, member nations of GATT decided to set up a new organization, World Trade Organization in place of GATT.

The opening up of economy gave the much-needed thrust to the Indian textile industry, which has now successfully become one of the largest in the world.

In the year 1995, WTO had renewed its MFA and adopted Agreement on Textiles and Clothing (ATC), which states that all quotas on textile and clothing will be removed among WTO member countries.

However the level of exports in textiles from developing countries is increasing even if in the presence of high tariffs and quantitative restrictions by economically developed countries.

Moreover the role of multifunctional textiles, ecotextiles, e-textiles and customized textiles are considered as the future of textile industry.

IMPACT OF APPLICATION OF WTO RULES As of 1 January 2005, WTO rules have been applied to trade in textiles and clothing as in all other areas of trade. These include the core WTO principles of Transparency and Non -discrimination.
