Drawbond Spring 2013 Essay 1: Description and Coming to Terms with Place
In class we have discussed the importance of close observation and the effect places can have on our lives. Prompt: Choose a place that has had an important impact on your life. Make sure this is a place that you can remember well enough to describe in detail. In this essay you will first describe the place physically (what did it look like, smell like, sound like, etc.). Next, you will describe the impact this place has had on your life. What emotions are tied to this place? Why is/was this place so significant? Make sure that you follow the format of the attached outline! This should be a full essay with multiple paragraphs, including an introductory paragraph and a concluding paragraph. You should also have two body paragraphs: one paragraph that describes the place and another paragraphs that explains why this place is important to you and the emotions tied to this place. Work on having a specific thesis statement that briefly explains the place you will describe and why this place is significant to you. Your ideas should be organized into paragraphs with clear topic sentences. The rough drafts you bring for peer review and your final draft must be typed no handwritten papers will be accepted for full credit. Your essay should be between 400-500 words. Please write the word count at the end of your paper. The word count can be found at the bottom of the screen when you are typing in Microsoft Word. I will check to see that your composition is between 400-500 words. Your essay should be in correct MLA format, which includes using 12 point, Times New Roman font, double-spacing, one-inch margins all around, and correct MLA format heading and page numbering. There is more information about MLA format on the class website. Do the best work you can! If you have questions or feel that you need help, you can see me during my office hours, which are listed on your syllabus.
