5 Sentence Patterns

S-AV S-AV-DO S-AV-IO-DO S-LV-PN S-LV-PA Key: S- Subject AV- Action Verb DO- Direct Object IO- Indirect Object LV- Linking Verb PN- Predicate Noun PA- Predicate Adjective

S-AV
The dog ran. The big dog ran quickly. (Adjectives and adverbs simply describe. They dont change the sentence pattern) The big dog ran quickly across the street. (Prepositional phrases dont change the sentence pattern)

S-AV-DO
S AV DO The boy kicked the ball. (Direct objects answer what? Take the action verb and ask (verb) what? The noun or object that answers the question is the direct object. They ARE not part of a prepositional phrase.)

S-AV-IO-DO
S AV IO DO The student handed the teacher her test. (Indirect objects answer the questions To whom or For whom? They also answer To what or For what. They ARE NOT part of a prepositional phrase and they always come between the action verb and direct object)

S-LV-PN
S LV PN My sister is the setter for the volleyball team. (Predicate nouns are nouns that rename the subject.)

S-LV-PA
S LV PA My sister is athletic

(Predicate adjectives describe the subject.)
