BUILT ENVIRONMENT ISSUES GROUP (BEIG) 2006 ANNUAL REPORT BEIG held two meetings during 2006.

The first meeting was held during the NAEA conference on March 24, hosted by the Chicago Architectural Foundation. 1. The first item of business was an update of the attempted name change from BEIG to DEIG. The request, with rewritten mission statement, vision statement, and by-laws submitted in 2006 to the NAEA Board was denied. The reply stated that design education is not clearly understood by NAEA members. The Board had questions that related to expanding the groups focus, what would enable the group to do better if a change was made, and the role of the design professionals and their participation. The remainder of the meeting was used to determine the participants views of important factors that should be included in the mission, vision, and goals for this group, as well as an idea for a name. Jean Linsner, Jennifer Masengarb, and Krisann Rehbein, of The Chicago Architectural Foundation provided an overview of their K-8 curriculum guide, Schoolyards to Skyscrapers: Teaching with Chicagos Amazing Architecture. They then explained the high school curricula being developed to teach Chicago public school students about sustainable architecture, Chicagos architectural heritage, and the design process. Martin Rayala was thanked for his leadership of the previous two years and Robin Vande Zande was elected the new coordinator. The second meeting was held August 11, hosted by the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. The mission, vision, and goal/objectives were finalized.
