With the support of our ELO Catalyst teacher, Bev Shell, the grade 6/7 class learned about treaties, The Indian Act, residential schools, and how they have shaped and continue to shape history.

FRONT-END LOADING
TEACHER DIRECTED INSTRUCTION Within inquiry instruction is still a place for the direct transmission of knowledge. With this project, it was important to get the information to the students quickly so that they could draw on their new knowledge to create opinions, art, slam poetry, and be advocates for a better world. Giving this knowledge to students in a direct way, concentrated at the beginning of the unit, is called front-end loading.

POWER.POINT PRESENTATIONS & PROBING QUESTIONS Mrs. Shell delivered the content to the students largely through powerpoint presentations. Students were directed to document their learning on various graphs and charts. Probing questions were used to check for comprehension and understanding as we progressed through the information.

Assimilation meant giving up their cultural dress and customs.

Fear replaced love.

ENGAGEMENT.AND DISCUSSION Student engagement in the content was high. They were often shocked and disturbed by what they were learning. Discussions were lively, engaging, and numerous.

Cultural genocide an ugly part of our Canadian history.
