Journal #5: Joyce Carol Oates Three Girls 1. The conflict of the story is Marilyn Monroe being recognized and the potential of a scene being had doing an everyday task. The climax is the storyteller approaches Marilyn to help her. The conflict is resolved by her being helped by the young girls and the girls were rewarded. 2. Marilyn Monroe affects the story by becoming the central focus of it by entering the bookstore and capturing everyones attention. 3. There is suspense in the story when they approach Marilyn and had no expectations of how she would react to their suggestion. Oates creates this by suspense by describing Marilyns shyness and momentary reluctance to answer. 4. I interpreted the ending as the storyteller sharing it with a significant other with whom shared another special moment that same evening. As a reader, I did not find the effective because it confused me by including a character that was not part of the story.
