ANIMALS OF AFRICA

THE GORILLA
The Gorilla is the largest Ape.

The male gorilla may weigh 450 pounds.

He can stand up to 6 feet tall.

Although they look frightening, Gorillas are friendly animals who live in groups.

Mother gorillas take care of their babies, until they are about 3 years old.

The ZEBRA
Zebras are members of the horse family.
They live in small groups. Some zebras even have stripes on their ears and their tails.

Zebras eat mostly grass. Although they may look gentle, most zebras are very fierce. They are difficult to tame.

The ELEPHANT
The elephant is the biggest land animal. The elephants nose is called a trunk. The elephant uses her or his trunk like a hand, to lift and move objects.

When they are born, baby elephants weigh 200 pounds. They keep growing until they are 20 years old.

The LION
Lions live in large families.
The families are called: prides. The female, lioness, does most of the hunting.

The lion is a mighty hunter. They eat large animals, like zebras and antelopes.

The GIRAFFE
The giraffe is the tallest land animal. An adult giraffe may stand up to 20 feet tall. Giraffes eat up to 75 pounds of leaves and foliage from trees, everyday.

At birth, baby giraffes weigh up to 150 pounds. They can walk, on wobbly legs, within 5 minutes after they are born.
