2. Add ( ) to each side

3. Factor

4. Square root and isolate

A method for solving any quadratic equation, especially those that cannot be factored. The goal is to write one side in the form of a perfect square trinomial so it can be factored.

When you finish this step, you want the equation to look like: x2 + bx = -c Did you divide by a if a 1? Good!

Youre adding the square of half of the middle terms coefficient to each side. This makes one side a perfect square trinomial which is easy to factor.

Factor. Because the trinomial is a perfect square, the factors will be the same. They will be in the form: (x + )2

Take the square root. If you take the square root of a positive integer, remember to use . Isolate x.
