Fractions with Like Denominators

Adding and Subtracting Add or subtract the numerators and leave the denominator as is. Example:

Fractions
Mixed Numbers into Improper Fractions Multiply the whole number by the denominator. Place the product as a numerator and keep the same denominator. Add the fraction part of the mixed number to the result. Example:

Improper Fractions into Mixed Numbers Divide the numerator by the denominator. Your quotient becomes your whole number, the remainder is your new numerator, and the divisor remains your denominator (denominator stays the same). Example:

Multiplying Fractions Multiply the rst numerator by the second numerator. Write it as a new numerator. Multiply the rst denominator by the second denominator and write this as the new denominator.

Dividing Fractions First you must nd the RECIPROCAL of the second fraction!

Multiply the rst fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction.

Simplifying Fractions Find the GCF of the numerator and denominator. Divide both by the GCF and keep them in their appropriate place (numerator in the numerator and denominator in the denominator).
