More than 20,000 South Australian shoppers have signed a petition supporting changes to allow supermarkets to sell bottled wines. The Executive Spokesman for the Independent Supermarket Retailers Guild described the level of support as outstanding. The survey was available at Foodland and IGA stores and online for two weeks, receiving over 20,000 signatures. The independent supermarkets plan to only stock and sell South Australian wines, which would provide opportunities for smaller wine producers and more convenience for customers to purchase food and wine together.

South Australian shoppers are backing moves to sell local wines in supermarkets. More than 20,000 people have signed a petition supporting proposed changes to the Liquor Licensing Act which would allow supermarkets to sell bottled wines. Mr Colin Shearing, the Executive Spokesman for the Independent Supermarket Retailers Guild of SA, described the level of support as outstanding. The survey has been available to shoppers at Foodland and IGA stores across South Australia as well as on-line for the past two weeks, he said. At close of business last night, more than 20,000 signatures had been received and we are expecting many more today. The level of support has been overwhelming and leaves no doubt that the shopping community wants this measure in place. Mr Shearing said that in the preamble to the survey, Foodland and IGA had made it clear that the independent supermarkets would only stock and sell South Australian wines in its stores. The measure will provide the States smaller boutique wine producers with new opportunities to get their wines to market, he said. It will also provide greater convenience for our customers, enabling shoppers who want South Australian wine with their meals to purchase their food ingredients and wine together. Mr Shearing said the survey results would now be forwarded to the State Government.
